Potato Cellar Interior - Arco, ID

Anybody that knows me, knows that I despise tricky/poetic/flowery titles. For example, I would never title a picture of a waterfall "glorious mist of failed expectations" or anything lame like that. However, when I stepped into this dilapidated potato cellar, I had what was very much like a spiritual experience. The interior space reminded me of a cathedral, or some other holy place. The light was intriguing, and the space seemed much larger than it was. I barely remembered that this was just a facility that some farmer built to store a bunch of spuds for the winter. So, I was almost tempted to title this image "accidental cathedral" or something lame like that. Fortunately though, I didn't.

"glorious mist of failed expectations"...I laughed when I first read that.

Nice photograph tho. The light and shadow create some very interesting lines.

I just looked at the rest of the cellar photographs, and realized how every time I see these photographs of something so simple, mundane, and commonplace as a potato cellar, I'm struck by your ability to elevate them, to something beyond just a storage facility for potatoes. Just like you said about this photograph, how it made you feel you were in a cathedral, as a viewer, I'm given a sense that these structures deserve more than a casual glance, because, as the photographer, you have captured these in a very interesting way, both compositionally, technically (if technique is important anymore), and the handling of the light, etc...
In short, your work has always inspired me to improve my own.

Neat picture...perfect title.

I could use a good framer...Andy you listening? Check my blog and you'll see why. Hehe.

Not to steal Darren's thunder, they are nice shots. I have shared them with students from Idaho that actually know waht a potato cellar is.

They are impressed that you can make the ordinary into something worth paying attention to.

Go ahead, calling it a cathedral is okay, really, it is! This is a great photo.

This Photo brings back memories of the time my dad caught some friends and I playing in an old potato cellar. (I grew up in Idaho.) After a good swatting he told me never to play in one again because of the possibility of a collapse causing a slow and painful death... that cellar is still standing today.

Anyway, loved the photograph.
