Contest

I became curious about the number of potatoes housed in potato cellars during harvest this year. With the help of my friend Kyoung, I found out the approximate number of potatoes held in an average-sized newer potato cellar. The average newer quonset hut style potato cellar is 301 feet long, 31 feet tall, and 62 feet wide.

So, I'm holding a contest. The person who comes closest to guessing the number of medium-sized potatoes in an averages-sized newer quonset hut style potato cellar wins a 16x20" print of a potato cellar (what else?). This isn't the Price is Right, so it's not the closest guess without going over, it's just the person who guesses closest to the number I've received. To enter just post your guess in the comments box. The contest closes on November 12th at midnight MST.

Potato Cellar Dimensions

The winner will receive a 16x20 print of this image of a potato cellar interior in Arco, ID

I was born in Arco. Perhaps this is a cellar where I worked during potato harvest. Who knows.

So, I've done the math again and again, and I keep realizing mistakes. My final answer is 159,949,725.85 potatoes. Shocking!
p.s. Darrin, you can delete the other two answers of mine - they take up a bit of room here.

You steer your friends out to the south 40 as you give the dimensions of the cellar. Us farm boys know that they are not "full" so the number of potatoes is based not only on the size of the cellar, but also on the amount of space not occupied by out little spud friends. I respectfully decline to speculate without more concrete facts.

OK, let's assume the cellar is filled 20' high.

Calculating the cellar volume to be approximately 373,240 cubic feet and a potato size of 4 inches by 2.5 inches by 3 inches which yields about 60 potatoes per cubic foot, we get the number above. I hope I win!!!
