Freeman Park

I went out to photograph the Seventeen Mile Cave near Idaho Falls today. Susan was bringing the children down to "Boo at the Zoo" in the afternoon. I stayed around Idaho Falls in order to meet them at the Zoo. I wandered around Freeman Park, a beautiful park commemorating Idaho Vietnam Veterans. I made a few snapshots. After viewing them I wished I would have made some "real photographs". Here's one of the snaps.

i must ask: how would your images have been different if you'd used your "real camera". i got an idea what the answer might be but i want to hear what you'll say.

I guess I would have been on a tripod for one, which would have allowed me to use a smaller aperture for greater depth of field. I would have shot with medium or large-format, so I would be able to make a larger print. I would have had a slower shutter speed, which would have smoothed the water. I would have spent a little more time organizing a more careful composition etc. Digi is fun though.

would you have made this image if you only had your 4x5?

That's a good question. I may have, it's hard to say. I've made a lot more photographs now than I ever did. Is that a good thing? I don't know, probably.

i think for someone like you who is an accomplished photographer, it is a very good thing indeed. it opens you up a bit, gets you to make images that you wouldn't normally make (that's the case with me, anyway). and, as a result, i think you beome a surer photographer.
